Bonnie Smiley is pictured with Helene Dermon cutting the cake at the 75th Anniversary of the Tucker Free Library September 23, 1979. Bonnie Smiley was the mother of Margaret Smiley Russell and grandmother of our current employee Hugh Russell.
I have always loved books. My parents would bring me to the library when I was growing up. This place, the Tucker Free Library, is more like a home to me, not just a place where I work. I hope to work here as long as possible even though I have another full time job. Hugh Russell, employee since 2013.
I worked at the Tucker Free Library when I was 18. It was my first paying job and I was quite excited! The head librarian at the time was Helene Dermon. She was a good friend of my mother and I’m sure they probably cooked-up the job for me to get me out in the workplace. I was terribly shy and it was a great way to meet people! I was the helping hand that put books away, stamped out books, cleaned, and greeted people coming in. My fondest memories other than the people I met were the wonderful children’s area and all the cool old magazines in the attic! Margaret Russell, mother of Hugh Russell and daughter of Bonnie Smiley.
