With Russia being a focus of our attention recently, I decided to investigate what life in Russia was like to get a better understanding of the people and their culture that are so much in our news headlines. The library has a wonderful memoir by Elena Gorokhova entitled A Mountain of Crumbs. Elena, who was born in the USSR in 1956, relates what life was like in the early part of the 20th century until 1980. Her memoir brings to life what living in Russia was like in the early part of the 1900s from stories told by her grandparents and parents, and from the middle part of the century from her own memories. Her mother experienced pre-Soviet and Soviet Russia, and her grandparents stories are from World War I. READ MORE
